Chivas USA Show Improvement; Tie Against Union

Carson, CA – Soccer can be such a cruel sport. Just go ask Chivas USA.

Having lost its last six games prior to tonight’s match, it seemed like nothing would go right for the club. They’ve made all the necessary personnel changes possible, moved players into different positions, and even switched to multiple formations, but ultimately when you’re playing this bad, sometimes, you just have to back to the basics.

“Our goal is to win and turn around, we were unlucky a couple of times tonight. I am pleased with the effort. We need everybody to give 100 percent,” said Chivas USA head coach Martin Vasquez.

Yes, effort. Such a simple notion in soccer, but when you’re on a major losing streak, it becomes not only a battle between you and your opponent, but also between yourself.

The first change for Chivas USA in tonight’s match was simple; putting the best players possible on the field. That meant moving Jonathan Bornstein, who normally plays in defense to midfield, and starting Ante Jazic, the Canadian international, at left-back. Also part of the changes to the formation was starting the duo of Justin Braun and Jesus Padilla up top, and replacing Mikel Galindo, which in turn made room in midfield for Osael Romero.

These tactical changes almost immediately paid off. In the 5th minute Chivas USA midfielder Michael Lahoud sent a shot from just outside the box, which deflected off a Philadelphia Union defender, and just went over the crossbar.

However, Philadelphia opened the scoring in the 21st minute when an aerial pass from Roger Torres, was flicked on by Sebastian Le Toux, to a wide open Danny Mwanga on the right-hand side, who buried the ball in the back of the net.

Then, when I surely thought Chivas USA was bound for a seventh straight loss, something happened. What I saw for the next 25 minutes was absolutely amazing.

Not frazzled by the early goal, Chivas USA began to play an elegant, collective style of soccer that showed glimpses of how dynamic and strong this team can be. The team would control long stints of possession, moving the ball from side to side, stretching the Philadelphia Union defense, and creating some great scoring chances, most notably in the 35th minute when a pass into the box was headed by Jesus Padilla that ricocheted off the crossbar.

The equalizer then came for Chivas USA in the 42nd minute when a poor clearance ball from the Philadelphia Union found its way to Blair Gaven who was right outside of the box, and he lazered a shot past goalkeeper Chris Seitz, into the lower right part of the net.

The second of the half match lacked the excitement that we saw in first, as both teams had trouble keeping possession. The only real scoring opportunity for any team came in the 65th from Fred of the Philadelphia Union, who had a clear and open breakaway opportunity, but was stopped in his tracks by Chivas USA goalkeeper Zack Thornton.

I was impressed by the effort of Chivas USA. A tie at this point is almost as good as a win. If Chivas USA can show the same intensity and effort that they showed in those key 25 minutes of the latter part of the first half, then this team is going to be great.

Coach Martin Vasquez attributes the fall off in the second half due to a lack of patience.

“We were not patient. Very impatient. A tie at this point is a plus.”

Chivas USA will also be looking to improve on tonight’s performance with the addition of other possible players to the team. Currently training with the team is Giancarlo Maldonado, the 27 year-old Venezuelan international striker. Other players are also on Coach Martin Vasquez’s radar, but not yet disclosed.
Chivas USA’s will now hit the road and their next match will be on Saturday, July 10th against the Kansas City Wizard.

Chivas USA continues to struggle against FC Dallas

Carson CA -- Chivas USA are now losers of six straight games, after a disappointing 2-1 loss to FC Dallas at the Home Depot Center. This is not the result that head coach Martin Vasquez was hoping for, especially after working so hard with the club in training during the much needed stoppage to the MLS schedule, due to the 2010 FIFA World Cup. It is without question that the increasing laundry list of problems facing Chivas USA continues to grow, which now includes playing without the talent and creativity of attacking midfielder Sacha Kljestan, who recently was transferred to Anderlecht, a First Division team in Belgium. Coupled with the fact of not having defender Jonathan Bornstein for this match, who was playing for U.S. Men’s National Team in a crucial match against Ghana at the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, many wondered how Chivas USA would come out against FC Dallas.

From the opening whistle of the match, Chivas USA immediately showed what they had been planning in practice, emphasizing on keeping a collective defense shape, staying organized, and compact. However, the passing and communication was sloppy in the middle, and FC Dallas quickly jumped on the attack and created their first scoring chance in the 6th minute when Martin Chavez barely missed the net with his shot from outside the box, which went wide right.

FC Dallas managed to control much of the early possession of the game, as Chivas USA sought to figure out a way to break through the FC Dallas defense. I immediately thought of Sacha Klejstan and how valuable he was a midfielder for Chivas USA, a player who demanded the ball, controlled the tempo, was the catalyst that shifted the team from defense to offense, and made the key passes to create great scoring opportunities. At this point, all that Chivas USA could muster up for offense was a long distance shot from Justin Braun in the 21st minute.

The best scoring opportunity of the early first half came from FC Dallas striker Atiba Harris in the 23rd minute when he sent a thunderbolt of shot on goal, but was parried away by Chivas USA goalkeeper Zack Thornton. However, FC Dallas’s persistence paid off, as near the end of halftime, a corner kick by David Ferriera somehow found its way into the back of the net, which after review was actually deflected off Chivas USA defender Ante Jazic. It just seemed like Chivas USA could just not get a break, and when things are not going your way, the ball seems to always bounce in favor of the other team.

The second half saw a more aggressive and determined Chivas USA team. The offense came alive in the 53rd minute when Jesus Padilla nearly tied the game, striking a shot on goal from point blank range, only to be saved by FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman. Chivas USA continued on the attack, led surprisingly enough by Salvadorian international Osael Romero, whose creatively in the midfield and streaking runs on the wide side of pitch changed the complexion of the game. Chivas USA founds its equalizer in the 58th minute when a cross into the box by Jesus Padilla found the head of Osael Romero, who although is only 5’6, out jumped FC Dallas goalkeeper Kevin Hartman, and headed the ball into the back of the net.

The celebration didn’t last long as a just one minute later, FC Dallas midfielder Martin Chavez earned a penalty shot for his team after being shoved down by Ante Jazic in the box. Calmly and coolly, FC Dallas striker David Ferriera walked up to the penalty spot and blasted a shot past Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton.

Chivas USA continued to have trouble again breaking down the FC Dallas defense, and realizing that the speed up front of striker Maykel Galindo was not providing many benefits or scoring opportunities, coach Martin Vasquez decide to replace him with Ben Zamanski in the 68th minute. Chivas USA managed only a couple of more scoring chances the rest of the match, the best in the 76th minute by Osael Romero, who send a laser of shot from 35 yards, but saved by goalkeeper Hartman.

The final two subs for Chivas USA, Maicon Santos in the 76th minute for Jesus Padilla, and Chukwudi Chijindu in the 84th minute for Osael Romero, brought nothing to the match. The creativity was gone, the communication and passing in the midfield lost, and without a strong striker up top, Chivas USA saw themselves lose once again.

It’s now back to the drawing board for Chivas USA coach Martin Vasquez. But one thing is for certain, you can’t draw up talent. It is nearly impossible to replace a player like Sacha Kljestan. His creativity and control of the midfield is going to be a hard thing for this team to recapture, especially given the drop off of talent.

On a bright side, this match against FC Dallas was coming out party for Osael Romero. He showed the skills and talent that Martin Vasquez hoped he would display in MLS. Now would be a great time to pair him with someone else who has great ball control to exploit the flanks and create great scoring chances by driving crosses into the box.

Chivas USA return to action on Tuesday, June 29th, against Austin Aztex FC, in a third-round match of the U.S. Open Cup.

USA versus Ghana Preview: Rematch 4 years in the Making

It is the rematch we have been waiting for almost four years.

It seems like just yesterday. A warm and sunny day in Nuremburg, Germany.With Italy defeating the Czech Republic 2-0, all that team USA needed to do to advance to the knockout stages of the 2006 World Cup was to defeat Ghana. But it was an utter disaster, disappointment and debacle.

How vividly and painfully do I remember watching Claudio Reyna lose the ball in the 22nd minute deep in our own end, watching helplessly as a Ghanian striker Graman dribbled the ball with the speed and grace of a puma, striking the ball into the right side of the goal, past then goalie Kasey Keller.

A glimmer of hope of making the knockout stages was resurrected in the 42nd minute when then 23 year-old Clint Dempsey struck a bullet into the net, off a pass from DeMarcus Beasley. It seemed like us Yanks just might, just might, have enough to come back and win. But the feeling of hope didn't last long.

Just 5 minutes later, in stoppage time of the first half, Oguchi Onyewu was called for a foul in the box, and Ghana was awarded a penalty. Calmly and coolly, Stephen Appiah stepped up and put it in the back of the net. The dream was over.

So what have we learned since 2006? Let's break this crucial match-up down:

There will be two keys to this match-up; set pieces and who controls the midfield.

As we have seen in the last miraculous win by the United States, we are at our best when we control the midfield. It is going to be up to Michael Bradley, Landon Donovan, and Clint Dempsey to really push and control the pace of the game. When the find those open pockets of space, they are deadly and create the best scoring opportunities.

There is no doubt about it. Ghana is an athletic and well-conditioned team who plays great in the air. Ghana will test the physical capacity of team USA. Expect them to run up and down the pitch and really put pressure on the US team early. They know that the US has a history of giving up early goals. If they jump out to an early lead, it is going to tough to put together a comeback against this team. They are too fast, too well conditioned, and play great defense.

Team USA has something to prove this time around. The team looks like they are more united, playing better as each game goes on, and will take all that thunder and inspiration from the Algeria game and put it against Ghana. They know that whole country has caught soccer fever, from Nebraska, to New York, to Los Angeles. Heck, when Bill Clinton, Reggie Bush, are in your locker room leading a "USA! USA!" chant, you know your on too something! Let's hope this great run continues.

The game will air on Saturday, June 26th, at 2PM EST.

Deja Vu All Over Again For Team USA?

Win and advance to the knockout stages of the World Cup. It is that simple for team USA.

Hmm, seems like Deja Vu all over again doesn't it? Well, your right. In 2006, Team USA was in the same situation. With only 1 point in the group stages after two games, coming from a miraculous draw against Italy, their soccer destiny was in their own hands. A win against Ghana would have given them 4 points and a spot in the knockout stages of the World Cup. But it was not to be. A crushing 2-1 loss sent us Yanks packing, frustrated, disappointed, and all we were left was with another story of what could have been.

After a draw against England and an amazing comeback draw against Slovenia, which could have actually been a win if not for that phantom foul call that disallowed Maurice Edu's goal, it seems like lady luck is on our side this time. In a short tournament like the World Cup, sometimes a little luck is all you need to get through to the next round. But I surely hope, that this team, which is comprised of World Cup veterans such as Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and Tim Howard, have learned from 2006, and go into the final match with the same sense of urgency that they showed in the second-half of the Slovenia match.

The second half showed a team that played faster, made accurate and decisive passes, and played with a sense of purpose. You could see the sense of urgency on the players faces. If we are to win against Algeria this Wednesday, we have to play at that same level. Playing Algeria does not necessarily guarantee a win. Every team in this World Cup is a quality team. Go ask Germany, Spain, Italy, and France, who are considered the superpowers of futbol, but have had disastrous losses in the group stages.

So its win or go home for Team USA. I think we'll know within the first five minutes of the match which team has shown up to play, and lets hope that we see that fiery and fierce team that played in the second half of the Slovenia match.

U.S. vs. Slovenia: Match Preview

After a fortunate and tough 1-1 draw against England, the US Men's National Team will face their second opponent of the group stage tomorrow against Slovenia. Slovenia is currently the Group B leader, with three points, after a 1-0 victory against Algeria. If the US Men's National Team has any dreams of making the knockout stage, they must surely go for all three points tomorrow, start quickly out of the gates, and score first. Anything but a win puts the US Men's National team in a precarious situation, and surely out of the tournament.

Coach Bob Bradley on the upcoming game said, "They’re (Slovenia) are very well organized, and tactically I think they’re very smart. Their defensive record in qualification was outstanding. They have a good balance in the team, good mobility and some dangerous players, guys we’ve watched both with Slovenia and with their club teams. We have a great deal of respect for their team and look forward to the match.”

Even though Slovenia do not have experienced players playing in the Premiership, such as England had, Carlos Bocanegra is not taking them lightly. “We have some personal experience against the guys we’re playing against, if you’ve played in Germany, if you play in France. Just because they’re not in the Premiership, so to speak, we watch the other leagues around the world and we’re familiar with their guys. We’re not going to go into it taking anybody lightly just because the rest of the world doesn’t know their names. It’s an important game for us.”

The game will be won in the midfield. Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, and Clint Dempsey must dominate possession and be creative on the ball. This is also a prime game for LA Galaxy forward Edson Buddle. His ability to hold off players and keep possession is what team USA needs. Expect the US to come out fast and furious.

LA Galaxy Edson Buddle on Fire, Galaxy Stay Undefeated

Bob Bradley, it may be time to buy an airplane ticket out to Los Angeles. Edson Buddle scored his 5th goal in the last three matches as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the Houston Dynamo 2-0 at Robertson Stadium.

The Los Angeles Galaxy quickly jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute when Edson Buddle perfectly brought down an aerial ball, after Houston defenders Eddie Robinson and Mike Chabala couldn’t decide who was going to clear the ball, took one forward touch, and then blasted a shot past Dynamo goalkeeper Pat Onstad near post.

The game was pretty physical early on in the match, but things turned ugly for Houston when Landin was shown a straight red card in the 43rd minute for taking a leg sweep at Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez as he went into the corner to track down a ball.

The Galaxy wasted no time in punishing Houston for that mistake as in the 44th minute Sean Franklin played a nice centering pass which Edson Buddle one-timed into the left corner of the net.

With this win the LA Galaxy are now 3-0 and Edson Buddle is making a strong case to be given an opportunity to be called into the US Men's National Team camp this upcoming May. With the lack of depth at the forward spot, a hot Edson Buddle may what the National Team needs. World Cup history has shown that you need to bring in your players who are playing at their highest form.

Here is the breakdown for the upcoming games:

New York Red Bulls at Chivas USA - Are the NY Red Bulls for real? The construction of a new stadium, the recent signings of quality players like Salou Ibrahim, a forward from Ghana, and Joel Lindpere shows that are looking to win right now, and after 2 wings in 2 games, they stand in 1st place in the Eastern Conference... how do you like that Thierry Henry. For Chivas USA... being already at the bottom of the Western Conference is not good. Where is the offense? Players like Michael Galindo, Osael Romero, and Sasha Kljestan better have a good showing or they are surely to hear it from the Home Depot Center fans.

DC United at Philadelphia Union: The Philadelphia Union have their first home opener in club history, and who better to get your first win of season against than your new rivals DC United. Ex-DC United player Fred is going to be looking for some payback against his old team. The crowd should be as lively as the fans from Seattle FC and with VP Joe Biden in town, the pressure is on, but they will be fine.

Toronto FC at New England Revolution: New England Coach Steve Nichols looks more like a soccer genius every week that goes by. His timely substitutions always seem to work for him. These two teams match up pretty well and TFC will be looking to get that bad taste from a 2-0 loss in their season opener out of their mouths. The key will be TFC's Dwayne De Rosario vs. New England's Mansally. The player who can control the pace of the game will give his team the win. I like TFC in this one... the play well against New England.
Prediction: TFC 2 - New England 1

Colorado Rapids at Kansas City Wizards: Kansas City...you are in trouble. Claudio Lopez is back. You let him go and now he signed with the Colorado Rapids. The Argentine will now be wrecking some havoc upfront while also dealing with Conor Casey and try to beat their defense led by Marvell Wynne. Mark this one easily for Colorado.
Prediction: Colorado 3 - Kansas City 0

Los Angeles Galaxy at Houston Dynamo: A rematch of the Western Conference finals. This will be a physical game. Edson Buddle will be a marked man. Houston will be without Brian Ching.. so lets see if Landin can show the quality of player he is. This one will be physical and end in a draw.. just like last year. Landon Donovan is staying away from physical play as he wants to make it to World Cup in one piece.
Prediction: Houston 0 - LA Galaxy 0

FC Dallas at Columbus Crew: Jeff Cunningham is looking to make the World Cup squad and off he goes on a tear this weekend. Sorry Columbus, FC Dallas has much more to lose. FCD goalkeeper Darío Sala has never beaten the Crew. For his career, Sala is 0-4-0 against Columbus with a goals-against-average of 2.00. Not anymore.

San Jose Earthquake at Chicago Fire: Both teams are looking for their first win. Chicago Fire head coach Carlos de los Cobos has the offensive firepower with Collins John, Brian Mcbride to really hurt the Earthquake defense. It is going to be physical but Chicago will get its first win

Seattle Sounders FC vs. Real Salt Lake: Seattle is a great home team, but in 2010 they will show they are a poor road team. Real Salt Lake has its core nucleus from last years championship and Javier Morales is on fire. Your not going to beat them at home.

VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN TO KICK-OFF UNION HOME OPENER

The city of "brotherly love" officially welcomes its newest team, the Philadelphia Union. On Saturday the Union will host its first ever home opener versus DC United at Lincoln Financial Field. To make things even more exciting, former Delaware senator Joe Biden will be part of the opening kick ceremonies.

The Philadelphia Union are coming off a 2-0 defeat to the Seattle Sounders, in a tough road match, but have had a full week to prepare for this momentous game. Part of that preparation is solidifying the back line, and with the recent signing of Cristian Arrieta, an Italian-American who has played in Italy and in Puerto Rico, should help a defense that will be without rookie Toni Stahl who is serving a one-game suspension.

The game against DC United also will be an emotional one for Fred, who last season played as a member of DC United.

“I know it’s my old team, but now I play for Philadelphia Union and I have to defend my team and help my teammates,” Fred said.

Philadelphia is a great town for soccer, with as many hardcore loyal fans like Seattle. Midfielder Shea Salinas, who lives in Center City Philadelphia, puts the upcoming match in perspective.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Salinas said. “I would compare it to a Galaxy game when (David) Beckham is there, with 40,000 or 50,000 people there. It’s always nice playing in front of a huge crowd.

The game will be televised on Saturday, 3PM PST, on FSC.

Americans Abroad Update

There are now only 67 days left until the start of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, and Coach Bob Bradly is keeping a close eye on the US players playing overseas in Europe. The list of players trying to make the US Men's National Team is still up in the air. Some recent player injuries and amazing performances by players on the bubble is not making the decision any easier for Bob Bradley. Here is an updated list of the frontrunners by their respective position:

Goalkeepers:
Tim Howard - played all 90 minutes for Everton FC (EPL) in a 2-2 draw versus West Ham United
Brad Guzan - was on the roster of 18 for Aston Villa (EPL), but did not play.
Brad Friedel - played all 90 minutes for Aston Villa (EPL) in a 1-0 shutout versus Bolton.

Defenders:
Steve Cherundolo - played for Hannover 96 (Bundesliga) in a 0-0 draw versus Hamburg.
Carlos Bocanegra - played all 90 for Rennes' (French Ligue 1) in 2-1 loss to Lyon.

NY Red Bulls defeat Seattle FC 1-0

Mac Kanji's goal in the first half proved to be enough at the New York Bulls defeated the Sounders FC 1-0 at Qwest Field in front of over 36,000 fans.

Seattle FC were the offensive team for the entire match, but just could not find the back of the net. The best opportunity for Seattle FC came in the 77th minute when Pat Noonan crossed a ball into the box and Freddie Ljungberg pushed an open header wide right. Seattle FC also had multiple corner kicks, but the Red Bull defense was able to hold on tight.

This is the New York's Red Bulls first road win since May 2008. It looks like this team is for real, after defeating Brazilian powerhouse club team Santos FC in pre-season, the Chicago Fire in their home opener, and now Seattle FC on the road.

Bring Ching Injured: 2010 World Cup Out?

Houston Dynamo and U.S. Men's International Brian Ching suffered a left hamstring injury this past Thursday, in a 2-1 MLS match loss to Real Salt Lake.

“The injury has been evaluated by team doctors, and I'm hoping to get an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the strain,” Ching said in a statement Friday. “I have already started doing rehab and will be doing so until I can return to the playing field".

The news of Brian Ching's injury has major implications now on the U.S. Men's National Team. The U.S. Men's National Team is already possibly without Charlies Davies, who suffered multiple injuries in a horrific car accident last year. Charlie Davies, currently with his French team Sochaux, is trying relentlessly to get match fit, and earn his spot back as the primary forward on the national team.

Ching's injury now may open the door for other forwards such as Kenny Cooper, Eddie Johnson, and Jeff Cunningham. Another long-shot may even be Edson Buddle, who is currently on fire scoring goal after goal for the LA Galaxy.

“Honestly, I don't know (how the injury will impact Ching's World Cup hopes),” said Dynamo chief operating officer Chris Canetti. “Any injury is a tough situation for a player right now, but Brian's established who he is. I don't think he has to prove who he is. Bob Bradley knows what kind of player Brian is if he's healthy. I would assume he's going to be healthy by the time of the World Cup.”

This week, reports have AC Milan Defender Giuseppe Favalli linked to a summer transfer to the LA Galaxy. The Italian International, who is now 38, has been influenced by David Beckham while he was at AC Milan, to give the MLS a possible shot.

Favalli has played most of his career in the Italian Seria A with club teams Lazio, Inter, and now AC Milan.

What do think of the move? In my opinion, the MLS needs to focus on younger upcoming talent, such as the various signings from South American and Central America. The MLS cannot start being stereotyped as the UEFA "retirement league".

LA Galaxy win Season Opener

Los Angeles, CA -- The Los Angeles Galaxy opened the 2010 MLS campaign with a 1-0 win over the New England Revolution. A goal by Edson Buddle in the 6th minute off a Landon Donovan free kick gave the Galaxians the lead and would prove to be enough to win an injury depleted Revolution team.

The Los Angeles Galaxy also featured all of their three new Brazilians players, who are on loan from Sao Paolo FC. Leonardo had the strongest game playing as a center back on defense. Juninho has some flashes of brilliance in the midfield but deferred possession of the ball mostly to Landon Donovan and Dema Kovalenko. Alex was the last Brazilian player to enter the game, entering in the 25th minute, after Eddie Lewis suffered a left foot contusion.

Both teams had trouble keeping possession of the ball in the first half, but the second half saw the game really open up. Landon Donovan showcased that his time of Everton FC had really improved his game, as the Revolution defense had a hard time keeping up with his pace. Landon could have put up the Galaxy up 2-0, when he had a break away on goal, but decided to pass the ball to a trailing Edson Buddle, who could not catch up to the pass, and the play broke down.

The New England Revolution came into the match without key players Sharli Joseph and Taylor Twellman, and were clearly out maned, spending most of the game playing defense.

Last year it took the LA Galaxy six games before their first victory. Lets hope this a good sign of things to come.

Houston, Dallas tie in Season Opener

FRISCO, Texas — The Houston Dynamo and FC Dallas kicked off the 2010 campaign with a 1-1 draw at Pizza Hut Park. Houston scored first in the 36th minute with a goal by Mike Chabala. FC Dallas answered with the equalizer two minutes later with a goal by Atiba Harris.

With both Stuart Holden and Ricardo Clark signing new contracts with European club teams, the Houston Dynamo are looking to 3rd year man Geoff Cameron to step up and fill that essential midfielder role.

The game was very exciting and open in the midfield. Both teams had great set piece opportunities in the second half, but neither could convert them into a goal. The best opportunity of the second half came by Houston Dynamo Landin in the 84th minute, who had an open left corner, but headed the ball wide.

Clint Dempsey Injury May Keep Him Out of World Cup

U.S. Men's National Team player Clint Dempsey was injured on Sunday during his match for Fulham FC. Dempsey left the game after only 62 minutes with what appears to be damange done to his posterior cruciate ligament.

"Clint will be scanned tomorrow, but we feel it might be a posterior cruciate knee ligament, which would be very bad for us and he would be out for a while,” Fulham FC manager Roy Hodgson said. “It's a concern up front because Clint Dempsey is very useful for us.”

U.S. team spokesman Michael Kammarman said the U.S. Soccer Federation training staff had been in contact with Fulham, and the severity of the injury will not been known until after an MRI exam determines the exact ligament hurt and whether there is collateral damage.

This injury deals another blow to the U.S. Men's National Team who has key players injured such as Charlie Davies and Oguchi Onyewu. The U.S. Men's National Team will play its first World Cup game on June 12, so any major surgery for Clint Dempsey will surely keep him out of the World Cup.

After a wicked snow storm blasted through most of the United Kingdom, this weekend should be more back to normal. Here is a quick list of the key games this weekend:

Landon Donovan (Everton FC) vs. Manchester City - After another week of training at Everton, Landon Donovan should be in better physical condition to play more minutes in this game. His debut last week lasted for only 60 minutes. I expect him to continue playing on the right side and creating more opportunities on the wing.

Tim Howard (Everton FC) vs. Manchester City - Tim should be solid in goal again. The only concern is that Everton has had some injuries to their defenders, so communication will be key with whoever plays.

Jozy Altidore (Hull City) vs Tottenham Hotspurs - Jozy hasn't scored a goal in quite sometime for Hull City. He needs to get in a groove before the World Cup. This might be his breakout weekend.

Brad Friedal (Aston Villa) vs West Ham United on Sunday - Brad is solid in goal for Aston Villa. Should be consistent as usual.

Jonathan Spector (West Ham United) vs. Aston Villa - The American defender could see some action after the teams last loss to Arsenal.

Landon Donovan makes Everton Debut
Landon Donovan made his Everton FC debut on Saturday at the Emirates stadium versus Arsenal. In a game blanketed by snow, Donovan made a strong debut performance, going 60 plus minutes, and had an assist on Everton's first goal from a corner kick. Everton manager David Moye was pleased with his debut, "I thought Donovan did very well," he stated. "He cramped up, so we had to take him off and the cold probably didn't help him. Landon was a threat to Arsenal all day and he did a great job out on the right. Landon offers us plenty of options and that is why we are delighted to have him."

Freddy Adu arrives at Aris FC
Freddy Adu officially joined Greek club Aris on an 18-month loan from Portuguese team Benfica. Adu was welcomed by fans at Thessaloniki on Saturday and is excited by the new opportunity. He did not get to play immediately that day due to paperwork not being finalized. "I watched last night's game. I really like the way Aris plays, with Toni Calvo," Adu said. "We play a similar type of game." Adu will also join fellow American Eddie Johnson who was also loaned to Aris FC from English Premier League side Fulham FC.

Kenny Cooper scores for 1860 Munich
Former FC Dallas striker Kenny Cooper scored a nice goal for German club team 1860 Munich. Many believe that Cooper may ultimately be the striker that the U.S. Men's National Team needs for the 2010 World Cup, due to his size, speed, strength, and finishing abilities.

Carlos De Los Cobos named new Chicago Fire Coach
The Chicago Fire will announce on Monday the hiring of Carlos De Los Cobos as their new head coach. De Los Cobos was formally the head coach of the El Salvador men's national soccer team, who made the final round of CONCACAF qualifying. De Los Cobos, a former Mexican national team player, brings a wealth of experience and an ability to get the most out of average players, and has an offensive attacking approach to the game.

MLS Combine Underway
The MLS Combine is in full swing for many hopefuls entering the 2010 MLS Superdraft. One player making headlines is Oregon State and Generation adidas forward Danny Mwanga, who withdrew from the Combine reportedly because he has been locked in as the #1 pick by the Philadelphia Union and does not to further showcase his talent. Even though rain has altered the schedule of the combine as the fields are severely deteriorating, officials have ensured that all the games will be played.

Donovan to wear famous #9 for Everton FC

It was announced today by Everton FC that Landon Donovan will be given the famous number 9 jersey. Landon Donovan stated in a press conference today that he fully understands the history of this jersey at Everton.

"I am aware of the history of the number nine here in the Premier League and also the history of it at Everton. I am proud that Everton would give it to me and I intend to do the jersey proud as well. It did come as a shock when I was told I would be number nine. At the end of the day you get on the field and play but it is an honour to wear a special number, especially here."

So how famous is this number 9 at Everton? You can argue that it means as much as the number 23 does in the NBA. It is not only a BIG deal to fans of Everton FC, but also to all of the fans who follow English Premier soccer. So here is the history Landon Donovan takes on with this jersey:

Freddy Adu loaned to Aris FC

So this might be it for Freddy Adu, a final chance to show that the once so-called "American Pele" is the real deal. After leaving Real Salt Lake of the MLS in 2007 to Benefica, Adu has only played in 13 games since then, being loaned out to other clubs such as Monaco of France, and Beleneses of Portugal. So what happened?

Some say its the European soccer clubs natural negative attitude against American players, where they have to go above and beyond to earn playing time coupled with the fact the Freddy Adu is still so young, only at age 20. The reality of the fact is that any soccer player needs playing time to develop and grow his game. All the practice in the world means nothing unless you get some actual real playing time against actual opponents.

So now Freddy Adu is off to Aris FC, on loan until June 2011 with an option to buy. Aris Thessaloniki Football Club is one of the biggest Greek Football clubs of the Super Greece League. Freddy Adu will also join Eddie Johnson from the US who is there on loan from Fulham FC of the English Premier League. Both need to make a significant impact if they want to make the final World Cup Roster.

L.A. Galaxy Signs Three Brazilians from Sao Paolo

The LA Galaxy announced today that they have acquired three players on loan from Sao Paulo FC of the Brazilian Campeonato for the 2010 MLS season. Alex, a 21-year-old left-sided player, Juninho, a 20-year-old central midfielder and Leonardo, a 21-year-old central defender each spent two weeks training with the Galaxy in October, giving the Galaxy coaching staff a chance to see the players in action first hand. Per team and league policy, details of the loan agreements were not disclosed. All three players will be officially added to the Galaxy roster upon the receipt of their P1 visas and International Transfer Clearances (ITC).

All three players have come through the youth ranks at Sao Paulo, having played on the team that won the Super Group of the 2007 Dallas Cup, defeating Real Madrid and Chelsea en route to the title. They were also all on loan earlier this year with Toledo in the First Division of the Brazilian Paraná Championship.

Juninho is the youngest of the three players joining the Galaxy, not turning 21 until early next month. A quick and creative central midfielder, he has been at Sao Paulo since March 2004. Good with the ball at his feet and capable of striking the ball from set pieces, he was a member of Sao Paulo’s U-17 Paulista Championship side in 2006.

A big, quick and athletic left-sided player, Alex joined Sao Paulo in December 2005 after beginning his career with Mirassol FC. Capable of playing at left back or in the midfield, he helped Sao Paulo finish second in the Brazilian Under-20 league in 2007 before making his debut with the Brazilian Under-20 National Team in June 2009.

Rounding out the group is Leonardo, a central defender who has been with Sao Paulo since the age of 13. A former member of the Brazilian Under-16 and Under-17 National Teams, Leonardo is a tall, physical presence who is good with the ball at his feet and strong in the air, thanks in large part to his 6-foot-2 stature. He has won U-15, U-17 and U-20 Paulista Championships with Sao Paulo and was a part of the club’s Campeonato title in 2008.

Sao Paulo recently completed the 2009 domestic season, finishing with an 18-9-11 record for 65 points, two points behind champions Flamengo. The club are famous for their vaunted youth academy which is rated as one of the world’s best, having produced players such as current and former Brazilian internationals Adriano, Cafu, Denilson, Julio Baptista and Kaka.

U.S. Men's National Team prepares for World Cup with key friendly matches in 2010

In preparation for the 2010 World Cup, the United States Men's National team has announced that it will play Honduras, Netherlands, and possibly Mexico in friendly matches before it heads off to South Africa in June. Today, Coach Bob Bradley announced 30 players that will open training camp in Carson, CA on January 4th in preparation for the first game against Honduras, which will take place on January 23rd at the Home Depot Center.

"This is the start of six months of preparations for the World Cup, and it is important that we get started off heading in the right direction,” said Bradley, who led the U.S. to first place in CONCACAF qualifying. “We have had the chance to work with many of these players through their time with the national team, while others performed well for their clubs throughout last season and have earned this opportunity. We are continuing to evaluate the player pool as we move towards finalizing our roster for this summer.” (ussoccer.com)

The January camp of players is mostly comprised of MLS players and will probably be the only shot for these players to make the short list of players heading to South Africa, since many of them are making their first national team appearance. Here is the list of players heading into camp:

Freddy Adu Transfering Again?

So we all know the story of Freddy Adu, one of the youngest soccer players in America to sign a professional contract at the age of 14 with D.C. United in 2004, one of the youngest players to score with the U.S. Men's National team, and the supposed second coming of Pele. American soccer had never seen such a player with so much potential, skill, and soccer savvy at such a young age. After playing only three years in the MLS he was signed by Benefica of Portugal, but with all his talent, he has had minimal opportunities to play, appearing in only 11 games and scoring only 2 goals. The decision to play in European soccer has not panned out like he had hoped.

In July 2008, Adu joined French club AC Monaco on a season-long loan, with an option to join the French club permanently at the end of the loan. However after only 9 appearances for AC Monaco, they did not exercise that option and instead was loaned out to another team in Portugal, Beleneses. However, he has also had trouble making appearances for Beleneses, and it not for lack of skill or training.

Just recently, Freddy Adu was told he would start in a match and when game time arrived, he was left on the bench, and was not even used as a substitute. With the World Cup coming soon, he also knows that in order to make the final U.S. Men's National team roster, he needs to get much needed playing time to keep him fit and sharp. So let the Freddy Adu sweepstakes begin.

Freddy recently posted on his Twitter account, "I am about to make one of the most important decisions of my career. I have alot of help of course but i hope i make the right one." It looks like Freddy Adu is done with the politics, the frustration, the "games" that are played with him in Portugal. Like any soccer player, all he wants is playing time.

So where will he go? The EPL transfer window is coming in January and I could see him playing for one of the lower table teams such as Portsmouth who had an aging midfield, with players such as Mokoena, Mullins, Diop, Hughes, and Bosina all over 30. Now only could be an opportunity for Portsmouth to pick up a young talent, but if they do get relegated to the Championship Division, they know they will have a solid midfielder.

Landon Donovan stated the his decision to stay in Los Angeles is due to the commitment AEG has made to make the Los Angeles Galaxy a winning franchise and thathe was to be part of that. He has learned a lot this past year, on and off the field, and the decision was not easy to make.

According to the Daily Mirror, and other sources, the Landon Donovan sweepstakes is over. Landon Donovan will be heading to Everton FC of the English Premier League on a loan spell beginning in January.

The announcement is expected today at 12PST live from the ESPN zone in downtown Los Angeles. The L.A. Galaxy, Coach Bruce Arena, and Landon Donovan are expected to announce the complete details of the loan deal, which may include similar guidelines that of L.A. Galaxy player David Beckham and A.C. Milan. In that loan deal, A.C. Milan played a friendly match against the L.A. Galaxy during the summer of 2009.

Playing in the English Premier League will help not only keep Landon Donovan fit for the World Cup, but also improve his game by competing against some of the best players in the world.

US Abroad: Beasley has Spectacular game for FC Rangers

Now it begins to get interesting. Only 6 months away from the 2010 World Cup, I am going to be focusing major attention on the players that may be featured on our U.S. Men's National Team World Cup squad, being critical on not only their performances, but also trying to educate the average soccer fan on who these players are before the World Cup. First up, DaMarcus Beasley.

DaMarcus Beasley has made recent news because he has been left off key games recently for the U.S. Men's National team and has demanded a trade from his current club FC Rangers due to a lack of playing time. Beasley developed his early soccer career at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida and a stellar MLS career with the Chicago Fire between 2000-04 coupled with a strong performance at the 2002 World Cup gave him the shot to play in Europe with powerhouse PSV Eindhoven of the Dutch League. He became the first American player to play in a semi-final match of the UEFA Champions League against AC Milan. His career came to a halt in 07 as he was loaned to Manchester City of the English Premier league and injuries began to really affect his game. His transfer to Rangers FC 2007 has been a slow start, appearing in only 29 games since then. These recent issues has caused limited playing time and when he had a sub-par performance for the U.S. at the 2009 Confederations Cup, it seemed like his U.S. international career was over.

So now transfer rumors for DaMarcus Beasley have been flying around everywhere, from the MLS to Fulham FC of the English Premier League. He knows that he needs a lot of playing time to show coach Bob Bradley of the U.S. Men's National team that he is still the great American star that he once was. As we reported, it is in his best interest to show that he can still play at Ranger FC of the Scottish Premier League and that he isn't the player that runs away from adversity. The easy option would be to sign with another team, and hope for playing time. But what good is that? He needs to show that he can fight for his spot on a roster.

With that new passion, Beasley has had a remarkable last couple of games for Rangers FC and had one of his most amazing goals last night in a 3-0 victory over Dundee United. Taking the ball on the right flank he took on the defender, cut inside, and blasted a ball from about 30 yards, over the Dundee goalkeeper. It was a world-class strike. You could see the emotion and passion as Beasley celebrated his goal. Rangers FC head coach Smith has told Beasley that he doesn't need to go anywhere if he keeps playing like he did last night.

We need DaMarcus for the World Cup, so lets hope he continues his great form.

Transfer Rumor: DaMarcus Beasley to Fulham?

Our friends at the Daily Mirror across the pond in the U.K. are reporting that Fulham Manager Roy Hodgson has his sights set on U.S. International DaMarcus Beasley. DaMarcus who? Yes, the same DaMarcus Beasley who has been exiled from the U.S. Men's National team after his horrendous showcase in the 2009 Confederations Cup. To make matters worse for Beasley, he has had limited playing time at FC Rangers of the Scottish Premier League, and although he had a great game this past weekend, he is far from catching U.S. Men's coach Bob Bradley's attention.

So is Fulham a place for DaMarcus? Maybe. Fulham is set in the midfield with Damian Duff, Danny Murphy, Clint Dempsey, and others, but what they lack is some pace in that midfield and that what Roy Hodgson is probably looking at. Also, American players have mostly faired well in Fulham, such as Brain McBride, Clint Dempsey, Carlos Bocanegra, and Kasey Keller.

DaMarcus knows his situation. He needs significant playing time to get back on the World Cup roster for the United States. Beasley recently stated, "My current situation is not ideal. Its been frustrating. I'm looking to move because I want to play. It's not that I am not happy with the club. I just want to play."

So what does he do? Honestly, stick it out at FC Rangers. He showed more passion this past weekend in 73 minutes of play because he knows his situation. Play with a purpose. Too many times he acted like he was a megastar. Soccer is a "what have u done for me lately" sport in Europe, as if you don't produce, you're on the bench. The World Cup roster will be comprised of players in form, on a hot streak, and if DaMarcus wants a ticket to South Africa, play like you played this weekend. Show that you can overcome adversity and win your place on a team.

Virginia Wins 2009 NCAA College Cup

It has been 15 years since the last time Virginia won a soccer title, but the wait is now over. Virginia defeat Akron 3-2 via penalty kicks, after both teams went scoreless during regulation and overtime periods. Both teams had great opportunities, but the real drama came in the penalty shootouts.

Virginia quickly went up 3-1 after Kofi Sarkodie banged his attempt off the left post. However, a key save in the next round by Akron goalkeeper Meves on Jonathan Villanueva, and a goal by Akron's Scott Caldwell made it 3-2. In the 5th penalty round Arkon's goalkeeper Meves once again made a huge save and stopped Greg Monoco's shot, which he tried to place in the lower right corner. This left a chance for Akron to tie the penalty shoot out.

The match was now in the hands of Blair Gaven, the same young man whose PK goal in the semi-final round led them this championship game. His shot, over the crossbar. His reaction, laying motionless on the penalty kick spot as Virginia jumped and celebrated it's first title since 1994, winning 3-2 in penalty kicks. The agony of college sports, one week your the hero, one week your the man who lost the championship game.

"I don't remember Blair missing a PK in the two years I've coached him," Akron coach Porter said.

The championship for Virginia will hopefully help revitalize the once powerhouse program.

"There's a great tradition at UVA. We have the stars on our jerseys. We have the pillars. We have pictures of all the teams that won national championships in our locker room," defender Mike Volk said. "Walking by every single day and seeing how happy those guys were in the pictures on the wall, we told ourselves as a team that we wanted to be there one day. That day finally came."

Transfer Rumor: Landon Donovan to Everton FC (EPL)

Here is the latest Landon Donovan transfer rumor: to Everton FC of the English Premier League. Various sources has reported Everton's desire to acquire Landon Donovan on a short-term loan deal.

On Thursday the Associated Press reported that Everton chief executive Robert Elstone said that manager David Moyes has identified Landon Donovan as someone he would like to bring to the club. "We are working to make that happen and hope we can reach agreement soon with all the appropriate parties," said Elstone.

The Galaxy have received multiple offers from various teams for Landon Donovan. "They are one of a number of clubs who have contacted the Galaxy about the possibility of a short-term loan agreement for Landon," the Galaxy said in a statement to The Associated Press. "The Galaxy, MLS and Landon's representative will work together to determine if and whether an arrangement with Everton or any other club would be beneficial to all parties."

I believe that if the Everton deal can meet the needs of all parties, he would rather play their than with Club America of the Mexican Premier Division. The style of play, would most benefit not only Landon Donovan, but the U.S. National Team, as it would give him experience playing in England, and against players for the England National team. Week in and week out he would be playing against some of the best players in the world and would also get a chance to reunite with national teammate Tim Howard, who is the goalkeeper of Everton FC.

Now while the highlight of these past couple of days in Cape Town, South Africa was the Final World Cup Draw bid, there was other business to attend to as well, seeing the presentation videos of the 10 candidates vying to host the World Cup in 2018 or 2022. The United States bid for the 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cups™ is an open invitation to FIFA to return to this country and build upon the legacy that it founded in 1994.

The United States has had arguably the most successful World Cup ever. In 1994, not only did we sell over 3.4 million tickets, but also created the MLS in 1996. In order to host the World Cup in 1994, FIFA stipulated that a creation of a professional soccer league must be done by 1996. Now in it's 14th year, the MLS has become a solid professional soccer league, developing great American born players, and attracting global superstars such as David Beckham, Chuatemo Blanco, Barros Schelotto, and now possibly Thiery Henry in 2010/11.

After the World Cup is over in July, the FIFA Selection Committee will travel to all the bidding nations and do a tour to see which country has the capacity, infrastructure, and overall ability to host such a huge event. They will be traveling from east to west, starting in Australia, and ending last in the United States. The final decision will come in December 2010.

Well, the new expansion team Philadelphia Union have started off well by not only acquiring a top level coach in Peter Nowak, but by adding a top-notch defender in Danny Califf. Here is a quick excerpt from the story as brought to us by the Official Philadelphia Union website:

"Philadelphia Union have acquired the rights to United States Men’s National Team veteran Danny Califf. The 29-year old central defender will join Philadelphia Union from FC Midtjylland in the Danish Superliga, after the club acquired his League rights in a trade with the Houston Dynamo for allocation money. As per club policy, details of the deal will not be disclosed.

Califf brings leadership and international experience to Philadelphia Union, having earned 23 caps with the USMNT. In 2009, he captained the side’s 3-2 win over Sweden and helped them to a first place finish in the CONCACAF region to earn a trip to the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

After a disappointing 2006 World Cup, the US Men's National Team is on a mission of redemption, and after today's final 2010 World Cup Draw, they now know who their opponents will be in Group C: England, Algeria, and Slovenia. Here is a breakdown of their opponents and what the US Men's National Team can expect:

England - FIFA Ranked #9

Well, what can you say about England. They have Wayne Rooney (Man U.), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Jermain Dafoe (Tottenham), John Terry (Chelsea) and David Beckham (L.A. Galaxy). They are mentally and physically strong, and the majority of their squad plays in the EPL, the English Premier League, arguably the best soccer league from top to bottom in the world. The U.S. Men's National Team lost 2-0 to England in a friendly match earlier this year at Webley Stadium. What stood out from that match was the pace and passing quality from England. Although they played a mostly European-based US squad, England was far superior. However, I believe that the U.S. will use what they have learned from recent matches to play close with England. England coach Fabio Capello said about the upcoming matches, "We’ve played and beaten USA and Slovenia recently, both are well organised, they like to pass the ball and they’ll be good opponents."

Slovenia - FIFA Ranked #33

This is a team not to be taken lightly. They have great players who play all over Europe and recently defeated Russia, a great soccer team. Slovenia, who has no "major" soccer stars, plays as a united team, emphasizing team unity above all, and plays compact. Landon recently stated, "They play like other team for the eastern block of Europe. They are compact. But we need to watch video to learn more about their players."

Algeria - FIFA Ranked #28

Algeria is a team who has defeated Egypt in qualifying and recently beat Uruguay 1-0 in a friendly match. They have a strong midfield lead by Yazid Mansouri who plays for Lorient in France. The U.S. should have its way against Algeria and speed will play a huge role.

Prediction US 2 - Algeria 0

The U.S. Matches will be: June 12th in Rustenberg vs. England, June 18th in Johannesburg vs Solvenia and on June 23 vs Algeria.

If the U.S. get through they will most likely play the winner of Group D: Germany.

Landon Donovan to Club America?

Rumors have been swirling all over the place over where Landon Donovan might be transferred or loaned too. The most credible offer has been from Club America where Landon Donovan would play during the 2010 Mexican Clasura which is from January to May. This would keep him in great form running up to the 2010 World Cup.

Landon Donovan posted yesterday on his Facebook, "Just wanted to send a quick note regarding the Club America rumors. I certainly am interested but haven't heard anything yet...we'll see what happens." The logistical portions of a loan would surely include not only a huge loan fee but possibly a game versus the L.A. Galaxy, similar to the A.C. Milan deal with David Beckham.

The most interesting aspect of this loan deal would be how Mexican soccer fans deal with Donovan playing in Mexico. Donovan is surely the most hated American soccer player to Mexican fans, partly due some of his critical goals against the Mexican National Team, such as the goal in the 2002 Quarterfinal World Cup match, and also incidents where he desecrated the infamous Azteca Stadium by urinating on the field.

Personally, I would like to see him play in the EPL, (English Premier League), where the competition is much better and the quality of play is most similar to a World Cup atmosphere.

MLS Playoffs: Revs Win Late; Galaxy/Chivas Draw

New England Revolution 2 - Chicago Fire 1

What a pair of exciting games we had on Sunday! The New England Revolution were able to pull out a late goal from Shalrie Joseph in the 75th minute to take a 2-1 win over the Chicago Fire. The Chicago Fire took the early lead when a shot from Jay Heaps was saved by Revolution goalkeeper Matt Reis, but he ended up pushing the save right to Chris Rolfe at the penalty spot, which Rolfe quickly shot on net and scored.

The Revolution tied the game in stoppage time of the first have when a free kick by Mansally was whipped in the box and Osei beat Mike Banner to the ball and flicked home the effort with the back of his head into the net. The go ahead goal came in the 75th minute when a corner kick was cleared right to Larentowicz, who drove a low cross back into the mix, and Phelan poked the ball right to Shalrie Joseph who beat Chicago Fire goalkeeper Busch and scored. The 2-1 win gives the aggregate advantage to the Revs as they now head to Chicago for the second leg of the match up.

Los Angeles Galaxy 2 - Chivas USA 2

What better than having the Super Classico match during the playoffs! This match however was a comedy of errors as well as very physical. Chivas USA scored first in the 5th minute when Maicon Santos, who was dribbling up the left side, quickly shot on goal, surprising Donovan Ricketts, and it when in the lower right of the goal. The Galaxy quickly tied the game in the 14th minute when Mike Magee took a bad clearance from Chivas USA defender Cuesta from the penalty area and shot to beat goalkeeper Zack Thornton.

The next blunder came in the 41st minute when David Beckham's free kick in the box bounced around and Chivas USA Maicon Santos, in an attempt to clear the ball, actually put the ball back in play towards the Chivas USA penalty box, where as Landon Donovan was exiting, he ended finding himself with the ball, and quickly shot on net, surprising and beating Zack Thornton.

Chivas USA scored an equalizer in the 50th minute of the second half as a bad pass from Omar Gonzalez towards Donovan Ricketts was stolen by Galindo, who went around Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts and put in the empty net.

Both teams had great chances to win, as Chivas USA Nagamura blasted a ball that was finely save by Donovan Ricketts. The best chances were missed by Galaxy forward Alan Gordon. He first missed a open header play to him from Landon Donovan, and then he missed a golden opportunity where he shot on goal instead of passing the ball to an open Landon Donovan on the left side of the goal, because he never lifted his head up on the play.

The next game will be next Sunday, November 8th for these two teams.

The defending MLS Champs, Columbus Crew, are on the verge of elimination after a 1-0 loss to underdog RSL Saturday. Robbie Findley's goal in the 88th minute gave RSL the edge in a physical match that saw much of the game being contested in the midfield, with each team having limited chances to score. Each team only managed to muster 2 shots on goal each. There was a combined total of 26 fouls. Now down a goal in the playoff match-up, Columbus will be forced to play aggressive on Thursday. MLS Recap: Galaxy return to Glory; One playoff spot left.

After three years of missing the playoffs, the L.A. Galaxy are back. After defeating the San Jose Earthquakes 2-0 at the Home Depot Center, with a pair of goals from Landon Donovan, the L.A. Galaxy win the Western Conference Division and now have home-field advantage through the playoffs.

The MLS schedule tonight was also filled with teams hoping to get into the playoffs, as four spots were up for grabs. Here is a quick recap of all the other MLS games from Saturday:

New York Red Bulls 5 - Toronto FC 0: New York played its last game at Giants Stadium in style and crushed the playoff hopes of Toronto FC who were eliminated with the loss.

D.C United 2 - Kansas City Wizards 2: What a heartbreak for D.C. United! Leading 2-1 just into stoppage time, minutes away from heading to the playoffs, and a hand-ball was called on Fred, giving KC a penalty kick, taken by Claudio Lopez to tie the game at 2-2. With seconds left D.C. United player Robbie Wallace took a strike from outside the box that hit the post. The game ended in a tie, D.C. United eliminated.

Real Salt Lake 3 - Colorado Rapids 0: Are you kidding me? RSL has a chance to eliminate Colorado for the second straight year! Robbie Findley scored two goals for Real Salt Lake. The win gave RSL the magic 40 points and a playoff birth, and now Colorado is hoping that New England loses to Columbus tomorrow, otherwise the Rapids are eliminated.

Seattle Sounders FC 2 - FC Dallas 1: Dallas FC took the early lead with a goal from Atiba Harris in the first half, but then the Seattle Sounder offense went on the attack. A second half comeback by Seattle Sounders FC was led by Nate Jaqua who scored off a rebound shot by Freddy Montero to tie the game at 1-1. The game winning goal came later from Brad Evans, giving Seattle a 2-1 and a trip to their first playoffs!

The final MLS regular season game is here and while some teams have already clinched their spot in the MLS playoffs, some still have a shot to make it, depending on their final game result. Here is a breakdown of the final games:

Saturday, October 24

Toronto FC at New York Red Bulls: In the final game to be played at Giants Field for the New York Red Bulls, as they are moving into their new stadium next year, this will culminate a truly disappointing season for them. With only 19 points, they were eliminated a long time ago. The game only matters for Toronto FC, who with 39 points, is in a must win if they are hoping to reach the playoffs.

DC United at Kansas City Wizards: DC United, also with 39 points, needs a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. Kansas City was officially eliminated after it lost its last game to Sounders FC. With DC United heading on the road, I expect them to muster up a win.

Colorado Rapids at Real Salt Lake: The two teams meet again in a regular season finale for a birth in the playoffs. Last year saw RSL tie Colorado 1-1 and take a playoff birth away from the Rapids. This year Colorado controls it own destiny with 40 point, and RSL with 37 needs to win or go home. RSL should be tough at home, but I expect Colorado not to let this opportunity pass them again.

Dallas FC vs Seattle Sounders FC: Dallas with 39 points is in must-win against Seattle. Seattle with 44 points, has already clinched their playoff spot, but hopes a win will give them a better seeding in the next round. At home Seattle will be tough and I expect them to win.

San Jose Earthquakes vs Los Angeles Galaxy: The L.A. Galaxy are tied with Houston atop the Western Conference and a win will give them their first Conference title in years. San Jose is in last place in the conference. No brainer here.. Congrats to L.A. on returning to the playoffs and winning the Conference title!

Houston Dynamo vs Chivas USA: Two teams with 45 points, and depending on the L.A. Galaxy result, one of these teams may sneak in to be the Western Conference Champion. Chivas USA has been playing better and I expect them to win in this match. Will we see an all L.A. playoff match? Time will tell.

New England vs Columbus Crew: New England also has 39 points, and with all the other 39 point teams hoping to make the playoffs, they have the hardest test. Playing on the road versus the defending MLS champions, who sit atop the Eastern Conference leader board, well.... they're toast. Columbus will not lose at home, and will be the Eastern Conference champs for 2009. The question is can Columbus repeat?

U.S. Men's National Team Qualifies for 2010 World Cup

Folks, pack your bags, we are heading to South Africa! After defeating Honduras tonight 3-2 at the Estadio Olimpico in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the U.S. Men's National Team has enough points now to be officially qualified for the 2010 World Cup. In a hard fought match, the U.S. Men's team had to come back from a 1-0 deficit to take the lead and eventually the win. Here are the key highlights:

In a first half that was mostly dominated by the Honduran defense, Charlie Davies missed an open shot from inside the 6 yard box after his header was saved by the Honduran goalkeeper. That was pretty much all the U.S. could muster in the first half. Tim Howard made some key save to keep the score 0-0 at the half.

The second half was a flood of goals. Honduras opened up the scoring with De Leon scoring from a free kick from about 20 yard out. The shot was perfect, going over the U.S. defensive wall, Tim Howard had no chance. The U.S. tied the game later in the half when a long pass by Oneywu was deflected by Charlie Davies up in the air, in a 50/50 ball, Conner Casey beat the Honduran goalkeeper and the ball rolled the net. The next goal was also by Conner Casey as Landon Donovan provided a world-class through ball that Casey put back in the net. The final U.S. goal came on a great free kick strike by Landon Donovan.

The U.S. had to hold on to the lead as Honduran striker Carlos Pavon missed a Penalty Kick to tie the game and an open header in the 89th minute.

South Africa here we come!

Beckham to AC Milan Again?

After a 1-0 win for the L.A. Galaxy last night over the Chicago Fire, and temporarily taking the top spot in the Western Conference, the drama continues, again. According to the Mail, a London newspaper, and sources at the AP, Beckham is close to closing a deal that will have him do another loan spell with AC Milan. "There are other options available," he told the Mail on Sunday newspaper. "But none that will stop me going to Milan."

According to MLS Commissioner Don Garber, "That deal I think hasn't been fully finalized yet but I know he is interested in going to Milan and he's in conversation with the L.A. Galaxy about doing a loan again and discussing coming back."

However, it is pretty much a done deal. Why? We all know that for David Beckham, country comes before club, and if he wants to continue to play for the England National Team, and have any hopes of making the 2010 World Cup squad, he is going to have to play for a top European club team. That has been clearly stated by England head coach Fabio Capello.

It means so much to David Beckham that in his previous loan spell he paid money out of his own pocket to stay at AC Milan, and continue to be selected for the England National Team.

So what do we make of it this time around? Is it good for the MLS? In all reality, Beckham must do what he is most passionate about, playing for his country and making the 2010 World Cup squad. Loyal MLS fans will once again be upset is his "non-commitment" to the league, but how can tell any soccer player not to follow his dream and passion. A true fan will understand that country does come before club. Don't worry, after the World Cup is over Beckham will be so involved in the MLS, he is even considering buying his own team and really growing the sport. Let's hope that is the case.

22-Man Roster Announced; U.S. Men's National Team Prepares for Final Two Games

Sitting in first place in the final round hexagonal round of World Cup Qualifying within CONCACAF, coach Bob Bradley today announced the final 22-Man roster for the final two U.S. World Cup qualifying matches. The U.S. currently has 16 points and a win in either of their two final matches would surely guarantee them a spot within the 2010 World Cup. Their next game will be on Oct 10th versus Honduras at Honduras. The U.S. will be looking for a win, as they do not want to leave their World Cup fate to a final game on Oct 14th versus Costa Rica at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C., so lets take a look at the 22-Man roster by position:

GOALKEEPERS: Brad Guzan & Tim Howard. Tim Howard is your starter. Has been playing lights out for Everton in the EPL lately, posting four shutouts and winning 2-1 vs. FC BATE Borisov in the UEFA Europa League tournament. Tim will be solid once again in net.

DEFENDERS: Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Bornstein, Steve Cherundolo, Jimmy Conrad, Clarence Goodson, Oguchi Onyewu , Jonathan Spector. I see Bocanegra, Onyewu, Cherundolo, and Spector in the back, they have the most international experience as a group. I'm surprised not to see Frankie Hejduk on the team, he would be great for a tough match in Honduras.

MIDFIELDERS: Michael Bradley, Ricardo Clark, Clint Dempsey, Benny Feilhaber, Stuart Holden, Robbie Rogers, José Francisco Torres. The wealth of talent in the midfield has made it hard to narrow it down. I like Bradley, Dempsey, Clark, to start. We will probably use Holden and Rogers to open the game with their speed towards the end of the matches. What about the fourth midfielder you say? I expect Donovan to play right underneath two forwards and have free range on the pitch.

FORWARDS: Jozy Altidore, Conor Casey, Brian Ching, Kenny Cooper, Charlie Davies, Landon Donovan. The game in Honduras will be key to narrow down the forwards for the 2010 World Cup. I expect to see Altidore and Davies up top, they play well together, and will coordinate the attack, speed, power, and more speed!

Catch the games on ESPN2 and Galavision. The U.S. vs. Honduras game was sold by the Honduran Soccer federation to a closed circuit company and therefore will not be shown on any network or cable channel.

MLS Weekend Recap: Teams Make Playoff Push

One of the things you DON'T want to do towards an end of an MLS campaign is question your teams strategy, philosophy, and chemistry. Now is not the time to tinker with your line-up, add new players to the mix, or hope that new formations will improve your teams performance. After this weekends games, it was obvious that the teams who maintained the most consistency in their lineups and stayed true to their form, maximized their opportunities and earned valuable points as the season is quickly coming to a close. Here is a recap of the games this weekend:

Columbus Crew 2 - Chicago Fire 2: Two second half goals by Guillermo Barros Schelotto erased a two-goal lead by Chicago. In a fierce battle between the top two teams in the Eastern Conference, the Crew earned a PK in the 79th minute when Conde and Lenhart went up for a header inside the box and referee Mark Geiger called the foul on Conde. Key Note: Chicago Fire Blanco suffered a hamstring pull and left the game in the 62nd minute.

Chivas USA 0 - Seattle 0: Both teams had multiple opportunities, but Chivas USA were really pressed after losing a player. Chivas USA went a man down in the 71st minute, when a high kick challenge by Saragosa on Freddy Montero quickly produced a red card by referee Terry Vaughn. Both players seemed to be going for the ball but the referee saw the challenge by Saragosa as excessive and dangerous. The key player of the game was Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thorton who made key saves keeping the game tied.

Houston Dynamo 3 - Real Salt Lake 2: In a back and forth game, one that saw the Dynamo take a two goal lead, only to be tied by a 10 man RSL team, saw the game winner scored in the 81st minute by Houston midfielder Brad Davis. The win kept Houston atop the Western Conference.

Kansas City Wizards 3 - Dallas 2: Two errors by defender Jimmy Conrad gave DC Dallas two prime opportunites which they turned into goals. Needing the win Kansas City began to really press on the attack and in the 77th minute Josh Wolf tied the game. The go ahead goal came in 80th by Jimmy Conrad who headed in a deflection off the goal post and into the net. This was a key win by KC who needed all three points.

Los Angeles Galaxy 2 - Toronto FC 0: An early goal by David Beckham and a late goal by Edson Buddle gave the Galacticos another win at the Home Depot Center. Although Toronto FC introduced their new designated player Julian de Guzman, it still was not enough. Some key saves by L.A. goalkeeper Ricketts kept the shutout intact.

U.S. defeats T&T 1-0, World Cup Qualifying within reach

With a 1-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday night, the U.S. Men's National Team not sits in first place with 16 points, and the goal for qualifying for the 2010 World Cup is within reach. A goal from Ricardo Clark in the 62nd minute gave the U.S. the lead and they never looked back. These types of games are sometimes much tougher because T&T has nothing much more to play for than pride, and played loosely and not under pressure.

Coach Bob Bradley was very pleased with the win, “For us it was a very important three points. We felt that it was well earned because tonight was a difficult game. A lot of credit goes to Trinidad & Tobago. I felt they put a great effort out tonight and made it very hard. We spoke at halftime and we understood the game we were in. We felt we could raise the level in the second half and we're pleased with the win.”

Next up for the U.S. is Honduras on October 10th from Honduras. This is THE key match. If the U.S. can win, they are guaranteed a spot for the 2010 World Cup. As Landon Donovan states, "Honduras has more to play for and we're going to have our work cut out for us. We were happy with the last 15 minutes of the first half and the second half. If we can continue that, play that way, be good defensively and make some plays going forward we have a chance to win the game."

U.S. defeats El Salvador 2-1 in World Cup Qualifying

After missing some key scoring opportunities in the early minutes of the game, and allowing El Salvador to take a sup rising 1-0 lead, a header scored in the 32nd minute by Christian Castillo, the U.S. Men's team settled down and a late first half goal by Clint Dempsey tied the game 1-1 and a Jozy Altidore goal in first half stoppage time game the U.S. a 2-1 lead going into the half. The U.S. Men's team had plentiful opportunities to take the early lead, with Clint Dempsey missing an early header on goal, Michael Bradley shooting wide right on an attempt, and Carlos Bocanegra missing a header from a corner kick. When El Salvador scored first, it brought back memories of the previous confrontation between these two teams, when the U.S. missed on their opportunities and El Salvador scored on their few chances. However this time the U.S. was able to responsd to El Salvador's early goal, when a free kick by Landon Donovan found a wide open Clint Dempsey, who headed the ball into the net. Although El Salvador fiercely claimed for "offsides" on the play, Clint Dempsey was actually onsides, as he came into the play from behind the Salvadorian defense. The U.S. took the lead in stoppage time of the first half, when another free kick by Landon Donovan found Jozy Altidore unmarked in the box, giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

Entering the second half, El Salvador was pressed to go for the win, having only 5 points in World Cup Qualifying, and the game became really physical and open. The referee allowed the game to become physical by not calling certain fouls, raising the intensity of the game. The U.S. scored a third goal when a good through ball found Jozy Altidore, but was called off by the line referee due to "offsides" on the play. The replay showed that Jozy was clearly "onsides" and a second goal for the youngster was wiped off.

The man of the match was Landon Donovan. Coach Bradley states, “Landon had a terrific game. He was very active and mobile. It was very important for us, and obviously there were the two great crosses for the goals. I think every game is different but we've seen some of that in the Confederations Cup. Landon has talked about how he feels he has matured, grown and taken more responsibility, and understands how to play the game at that kind of level all the time. It's been huge for our team. For everyone else to see what he's doing and how much he's putting into it has really set a great example.”

The U.S. now sits in second place with 13 points, only behind to Honduras due to goal differential. The U.S. will play next play on Wednesday September 9th against Trinidad and Tobago at Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad. The game can be seen live on ESPN Classic and Galavision at 8PM EST / 5PM PST.

U.S. faces El Salvador Tomorrow in World Cup Qualifier

After losing 2-1 to Mexico at Azteca Stadium and only one point ahead of the final qualifying spot, the U.S. is currently behind Honduras on goal difference and ahead of fourth-place Mexico by a single point, tomorrow's game versus El Salvador is a .... must win? With only four games to go in World Cup Qualifying, anything but a win puts the U.S. Men's National Team in serious jeopardy of not only not qualifying, but putting some serious pressure on a team that recently finished second at the Confederations Cup this past summer.

Coach Bob Bradley is not concerned at all since they are playing at home, at the Rio Tinto Stadium in Sandy, Utah. “I think the group is ready for this final stretch of qualifying. Playing at home is always something that means a lot to all of us, so I expect a great effort and a great result," said Bradley. The U.S. Men's National Team is 13-1-5 all-time versus El Salvador, only losing in a 1992 friendly in El Salvador. with 43 goals scored and only 12 surrendered.

El Salvador currently sits in fifth place with only 5 points in six matches and a loss means that they are surely to be eliminated. A recent addition to "La Selecta" is Arturo Alvarez from the MLS San Jose Earthquakes. Alvarez, after playing for the U.S. Men's U-23, and U-17 teams, decided to join El Salvador after he was made aware that he would not be part of the Men's National Team. Alvarez has dual citizenship with both the U.S. and El Salvador, as his parents are natives to that country. In his first game against his old team, it will be interesting to see how he plays.

Prediction: Going with history and common sense. USA 4 - El Salvador 0.

Seattle Sounders FC wins U.S. Open Cup!

The Seattle Sounders FC are the second MLS expansion team to win the U.S. Open Cup, defeating D.C. United 2-1 at RFK Stadium. Seattle opened the game with some quality chances, controlling the midfield and possession, and where it not for D.C. goalkeeper Josh Wicks, the Sounders would have been easily up a couple of goals by halftime. After weathering Seattle's initial onslaught, D.C. United began to create some of their own chances through the play of Luciano Emilio, but Seattle's world-class goalkeeper Kasey Keller kept the game tied at zero.

The breakthrough came in the 67th minute with a goal from Freddy Montero. After the goal, D.C. United goalkeeper Josh Wicks, was issued a red card for stepping on Freddy Montero. With only 10 men, D.C. United began to take more chances to tie the game, however it really opened their defense, and in the 87th minute, Seattle FC scored their second goal on a great run of play from Sebastein Le Toux, who sent a perfect pass to Roger Levesque who scored an empty netter.

D.C. United were able to pull a goal back in the 89th minute but where unable to tie the game, thanks to key stops from Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller in stoppage time. Seattle FC in their first inaugural season have added their first piece of hardware to their trophy case. 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Final Today!

Today two MLS teams, the Seattle Sounders FC and D.C. United, will play in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Championship, which is the oldest national annual tournament for team sports in U.S. history. Dating back to 1914, the tournament was designed to crown a legitimate national soccer champion here in the United States. Modeled after European cup tournaments such as the F.A. Cup that allows any and all entrants (from amateur, neighborhood clubs up to major professional teams), the tournament is a chance for even the smallest underdogs to get a legitimate shot at proving themselves against the country’s best (ussoccer.com).

Seattle will try to be only the second ever expansion team to win the U.S. Open Cup, only done before by the Chicago Fire in 1998. Led by skillful players such as Columbian striker Freddy Montero, the Sounders believe it has what it takes to bring the cup to Seattle. However, in their way is defending champion D.C. United, who will try to make their own history by winning back-to-back championships, not achieved since the New York Pancyprian-Freedoms did it in 1982 and 1983.

In their previous meeting on June 17 at Qwest Field in Seattle, D.C. United came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to tie the game 3-3. Recently, D.C. United has been playing pretty bad soccer, losing four straight, however, D.C. United found their form in their last MLS game, beating the Chicago Fire at Toyota Park this past Saturday evening. Seattle tied Toronto FC 0-0 is a tough defensive match in Seattle.

I expect D.C. United to use the home field advantage. They know what it takes to win these types of games. With players like Quaranta, Moreno, Emilio, they should have the experience and talent needed to win another U.S. Open Cup Title. It should be a close and tough match. If D.C. United can control the midfield and not allow Seattle's Freddy Ljungberg to dictate the tempo of play, they should fair well. Prediction: D.C. United 2 - Seattle FC 1.

MLS Weekend Preview: Rivalries + Playoff Races = Great Futbol

These are the games that matter. These are the games that make the difference between if you go onto the MLS playoffs, or wonder what happened, and to top it all off, the schedule if full of rivalry games. It is like Christmas in August for a true MLS fan! Teams are battling for playoff position, teams are trying to sure up the defense, integrate new players, and trying to to fix the final kinks before the final hual. Losing this weekend doesn't put you in a bad spot, it puts you in a real bad spot. Now is not the time to lose. Here is a breakdown of this weekends game:

Toronto FC (T-3rd East) vs. Seattle Sounders (4th West): This is more than game with playoff positioning implications, it is about showing who has the best MLS fan base! When Seattle Fans are promoting this game as "Green Hell", you know Toronto is going to be in for a fight. The battle in the midfield will be key. Alonso and Evans will have to control the game for the Sounders. Being at home I expect Toronto to do little and watch for Freddy Montero to have a big game for Seattle. Prediction: Seattle 3 - Toronto 0.

San Jose Earthquakes (8th West) vs. New England Revolution (T-3rd East): Coming off two wins in four days, the Revolution are playing well at home. Expect the revolution to play well against the last place earthquakes. I expect a big game from Revolution Shalrie Joseph. Prediction: New England 2 - San Jose 0.

D.C United (5th East) vs. Chicago Fire (2nd East): Having just won once in eight games D.C. United are in trouble, only one point ahead for the final playoff spot. Chicago is on a roll, winning two of the last three and only one point away from overtaking first place. Playing at home, I expect Mcbride, Blanco, and team to really try to earn all three points at Toyota Park. Prediction: Chicago 2 - D.C. United 0.

Real Salt Lake (6th West) vs Kansas City Wizards (6th East): Both these teams need points bad. The Wizards have lost three in a row and are nine points out of an MLS playoff spot. Playing at home will help them in the shorter field. I expect Claudio Lopez to come up big for KC. Prediction: Kansas City 2 - Real Salt Lake 1.

Chivas USA (3rd West) vs. Los Angeles Galaxy (2nd West)**: The Super Clasico is here again! The L.A. Galaxy are in great form taking 4 points from their last road trip. These two teams do not like each other at all. I expect a fast, fiery game, with Donovan and Beckham making a huge difference. Prediction: L.A. Galaxy 2 - Chivas USA 1.

MLS Teams Struggle in Champions League Play

Three MLS teams played tonight in Round 2 in the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions league and not one managed to win. D.C. United gave up a pair of late goals in the final 11 minutes to lose 3-1 to Toluca of Mexico. Now with two loses in Group B, D.C. United hopes of making the knockout stages are slim. The Columbus Crew was blasted 5-0 by Cruz Azul in Mexico and the winless streak of winning on Mexican soil continues. The Houston Dynamo were able to tie 1-1 with Arabe Unido of Panama. In a very chippy match that saw 11 yellow cards, 5 ejections, and stadium light failures at the end of the match, Houston was able to pull out a point, with a goal from Kai Kamara in the 69th minute.

The next MLS to play in the Group Stage will be D.C. United when they travel to play San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad and Tobago.

CONCACAF Champions League - Group Stage - Round 2

All three MLS teams will be in action today as Round 2 of the Group Stage continues in the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League Tournament. With the Houston Dynamo and Columbus Crew both winning their opening game in Round 1, all the pressure solely lies on D.C. United, who lost 3-1 to Marathon of Honduras. Here is a preview of today's game:

Club Deportivo Árabe Unido (Árabe Unido) (PAN) vs. Houston Dynamo (USA): The Houston Dynamo are coming off a close 1-0 win at home over Metapan of El Salvador with a second half goal from Brian Ching. This time however, the dynamo will have to travel to Panama to play a team who defeated Pachuca of Mexico 4-1, and are co-leaders of the group. Houston coach Dominic Kinnear said, "You can't come in thinking it's going to be easy because it's Panamanian soccer. Panamanian soccer is getting better. It's more physical than it has been in the past, and I think it's a nation that needs to be looked out for. But it'd be nice to get a result." I expect Houston to play aggressive and try to earn all three points on the road. Prediction: Houston 2 - Arabe Unido 1.

D.C. United (USA) vs. Toluca (MEX): After losing 3-1, D.C. United comes home and is in desperate need for all three points and it doesn't get easy as they have to face co-leaders of Group B, Toluca of Mexico. Two late goals in the previous game really left the team deflated, and now coming off a draw this weekend against the L.A. Galaxy in MLS action, the team looks like they have lost some of their form. Although they are playing at home, I don't see D.C. United doing much against a Toluca team who is better technically. Prediction: D.C. United 0 - Toluca 2. Sorry boys, early exit this year.

Cruz Azul (MEX) vs. Columbus Crew (USA): With both teams sitting as co-leaders atop Group C with 3 points, this is the game to watch. Can our MLS Champions win in Mexico City? The good thing for the Crew is that they expect to get Frankie Hedjuk back and with Marshall in the back line, this could the opportunity to at least pull out a draw. I expect the Crew to be patient and to counter as Cruz Azul will probably have most of the possession. Prediction: Cruz Azul 1 - Columbus Crew 1.

After today's game the next MLS team to play will be D.C. United on September 15 as the go on the road to play San Juan Jabloteh of Trinidad & Tobago. Games can be seen on Galavision and FSC starting at 5PM PST/8PM EST.

MLS Preview: Chivas USA vs Real Salt Lake

Coming off a 2-0 win over Toronto FC on Saturday at the Home Depot Center, Chivas USA has now maybe begun to regain their form from earlier this season where they tallied an amazing 22 points in 9 games. With two new additions to the team, Jesus Padilla and Maicon Santos, and Sasha Kljestan regaining some confidence, this team could be dangerous down the road if they begin to gel together and rack some wins. This confidence booster will surely be tested as they now go on the road and face Real Salt Lake on Wednesday in Sandy, Utah.

Real Salt Lake is playing a crucial three games in seven days, and they did not get off on the right foot by losing 3-1 to New England over the weekend. Sitting at 27 points, and second to last in the Western Conference, Real Salt Lake must now take advantage of playing at home and look to take all three points against Chivas USA. Defensive effort has been lacking for the club, and with an offensively recharged Chivas USA coming into town, they are really gonna have to play smart, physical, and with cohesiveness.

The game is on Wednesday at 9:00pm and can be seen on Direct Kick. Prediction: Chivas USA 2 - Real Salt Lake 0. Too much Chivas offense, too much bad Real Salt Lake defense.

Jozy Altidore Makes Dramatic EPL Debut

It only took 28 seconds for the American 19-year old to make his impact known in his debut game for Hull City of the English Premier League. Entering the game to cheers from the crowd, Jozy Altidore knew that he needed to have a good start. After minimal playing time at his original club Villareal of Spain, and no playing time at Xerez, Hull City took a chance on this 19-year rising American soccer star after his performance at the Confederations Cup in South Africa. Jozy was eager to join Hull as well because he knew that would get playing time, and he made a HUGE debut.

After entering the game, Jozy made an amazing swerving through ball pass to Ghilas who scored the goal. Jozy immediately showed his power, ability to hold off a defender, and his great passing technique. The crowd immediately went euphoric with joy as they finally had a lead in a game and went on to win their first game of the 2009/10 campaign. Jozy also had a chance to score his own goal late in the game, but the ball went just right of the goal. Either way is was a dream debut and it's gonna be great to see Jozy develop in Europe and help build the depth of team USA as they look forward towards the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

L.A. Galaxy defeat Chicago Fire 2-0

No David Beckham, No Problem. The L.A. Galaxy playing without David Beckham, who was suspended for this encounter due to a red-card incident in the previous game, defeated the Chicago Fire 2-0 at the sold-out Toyota Park in Chicago. Goals from Mike Mcgee and a breakaway goal from Landon Donovan earned the Galacticos all three points and now sit in sole possession of second-place atop the Western Conference.

The Galaxy will continue their East Coast road trip on Saturday with a game against D.C. United. With the return of Beckham, that should take some of the load off Landon Donovan in the midfield, who is still recovering from flu-like symptoms.

Columbus and Houston win in Champions League

After winning the MLS Championship last year, the Columbus Crew now have their sights set on another piece of hardware: the 2009/10 CONCACAF Champions League trophy. With a 2-0 win over the Puerto Rico Islanders on Tuesday in Columbus, they have begun that quest on the right foot. Two second half goals from Steven Lenhart and Robbie Rogers earned the Columbus Crew all three points in the Group Stage of the CONCACAF Champions League. The Columbus Crew will next travel to Mexico City to face Cruz Azul on August 26.

The Houston Dynamo beat Metapan of El Salvador 1-0 in a closely faught battle on Wednesday. The difference proved to be key substitutes from the Dynamo in the second half as Stuart Holden linked up with Brian Ching for the only goal. The win earned the Dynamo all three points in their first game and will next travel to Panama next Wednesday to play Arabe Unido.

D.C United fell 3-1 to Marathon of Honduras on Tuesday. A late goal in the 83rd minute by Jerry Palacios of Marathon gave the Honduran team the lead and they scored another one to seal the deal. D.C. United will has its next game the following Wednesday taking on Mexican side Toluca at RFK Stadium.

MLS Teams Prepare for Champions League

The 2009 CONCACAF Champions League is finally here and in the next couple of days we will see how three of our MLS teams fair against some of the best clubs from the CONCACAF region. This year representing the MLS are the defending MLS Champions Columbus Crew, the US Open Cup Champions D.C. United, and second highest overall point getter in MLS Houston Dynamo. Here is breakdown of this weeks games for each of the respective teams:

Tuesday, August 18th - The Columbus Crew will play the Puerto Rico Islanders in the opening match of the CONCACAF Champions League. "It's a huge responsibility for us," Crew coach Robert Warzycha said. "It's an honor to play. That means we did something good last year. It's also a chance for everybody to see international competition and to win something else. It's a big tournament." Coach Warzycha expects to play all his starters as the Crew have no games this weekend. I expect with the home crowd the Crew to win: Columbus Crew 3 - Puerto Rico 0.

In the final game of the opening day, D.C. United will travel to Honduras to play Marathon in Group B play. Coming off a 2-0 loss to Toronto FC, D.C. United is looking to regain their form. D.C. United will also have to dig deep into their roster as the Champions League game coupled with MLS games have flooded their calendar. "Again, it's going to be a time where we have to dig into our roster and share the wealth so that not too many guys get gassed," said the United boss. "With these CONCACAF matches, you have to look at each opponent as a two-game series. So it's not a one-game thing. You have to do what you need to do on the road and make sure you take care of home games." Prediction: D.C. United 1 - Marathon 2.

There are no easy groups when you get to this stage of competition." The quality of players that Houston has should easily show against Metepan of El Salvador. U.S. Players begin EPL Campaign

Many consider the English Primer League the best and most competitive soccer league in the world. With the growth of MLS soccer, which many U.S. born players has used as a spring board to bigger clubs, this year we have quite a few American players not only playing in the Premiership, but playing significant an important roles. Today launched the 2009-10 campaign and here a quick round-up of how our American players faired:

Clint Dempsey (M) - Fulham: After a great 2008-09 campaign with Fulham, Clint Dempsey signed a 5 year extension through 2013, and if today's match is any indication of things to come, Dempsey has all the luck on his side. A strong shot from 25 yards deflected off Bobby Zamora to give Fulham their only goal, enough for a 1-0 win over Portsmouth.

Brad Friedal (GK) - Aston Villa: Goalkeeper Brad Friedal has a tough start to the season. A world-class strike from Colombian striker Hugo Rodallegas and a second half goal from Jason Koumas gave Wigan a 2-0 victory over Aston Villa. Friedal had some crucial saves that kept the scoreline closer than what the game really was.

Tim Howard (GK) - Everton: After a tough loss to Mexico in World Cup Qualifying, Tim Howard's month is only getting worst. A 6-1 trashing loss to Arsenal at home is quickly raising some serious defensive question of Everton. Hopefully Everton can fix their leaky defense or it will be a long year for Howard.

Jozy Altidore (F) - Hull City: With minimal playing time at Spanish side Villareal, Jozy Altidore is glad to have been loaned out to Hull City trying to get some much needed playing time, however Jozy was not in the starting 11 or even on the substitute list. Lets hope we don't have another Freddy Adu situation and that he gets playing time.

Jonathan Spector (D) - West Ham United: Came on as a substitute in the 65th minute in West Ham's 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Marcus Hannahmann (GK) - Wolverhampton Wonderers: Did not play.

MLS Weekend Preview: Week 22

With only two months left on the 2009 MLS Season, the dogs days of summer are almost over, and teams are now jockeying for playoff position and trying to get themselves on a great run before seasons end. This weekend will showcase some great match ups that will show us who are contenders and who are pretenders. This weekends game include:

D.C. United at Toronto FC: Separated by only one point in the Eastern Conference standings for third place, both teams know how vital a win will be. In their last meeting on May 9th, both teams tied 3-3 in a spectacular game at RFK Stadium. Look for Toronto FC to use their home field advantage, playing in the always sold-out sea of red at BMO field. Prediction: Toronto FC 2 - DC United 1.

Dallas FC at Columbus Crew: Eastern Conference leaders Columbus Crew are in top form, regaining their championship level of play at the right time. In their last meeting Dallas FC scored two late goals in the last 10 minutes to steal the win at home. Don't expect that to happen this time as the Crew are playing at home and have revenge on their minds. Dallas FC has been an offensive juggernaut as of late, but the experienced Crew defense will be ready. Prediction: Columbus Crew 3 - Dallas FC 0.

Chivas USA at New York Red Bulls: With both team riding a five-game losing streak, one thing is for sure, they both need this win badly. New York has the fewest points in MLS with only 10, but with the next five games at home, I think that playing a hurt and lost Chivas USA team might be exactly what they need. Prediction: New York Red Bulls 2 - Chivas USA 0.

Houston Dynamo at Real Salt Lake: Western Conference leaders Houston heads north to Utah to play conference rival Real Salt Lake. With Real Salt Lake sitting just outside the playoff table, they know these points are crucial. In their last meeting Brian Ching scored a late goal for Houston to pull out a 1-1 draw. However this time, Real Salt Lake has more to lose and will definitely come out with energy and determination. Prediction: Real Salt Lake 2 - Houston 1.

Seattle FC at Los Angeles Galaxy: With the L.A. Galaxy winning 5 out of their last 6, they have quickly climbed up the Western Conference standings. Seattle FC started out strong, but in their inaugural campaign, they are now seeing how long a season can be, as they have lost two out of the last three. L.A. might be missing Landon Donovan, who acquired the H1N1 virus last week. This game will be hard fought but L.A. will come out on top. Expect more boos for David Beckham as well, then cheers as he scores a late goal. Prediction: L.A. Galaxy 2 - Seattle 0.

Chicago Fire at Kansas City Wizards: With a new coach, Kansas City is looking to end a four-game losing streak. With Vermes now at the helm I expect a great boost playing at home. Chicago will prove to be tough, but the home crowd, new coach, small field all play into Kansas City's favor. Prediction: Kansas City 2 - Chicago Fire 1.

U.S. still winless at Azteca, loses 2-1 to Mexico

What I saw and heard today from the U.S. Men's National Team has me so angered and disappointed, that I haven't felt like this since we failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1986, and since the disappointing performance at the 2006 World Cup where we only scored a single goal. This was supposed to be a historic day, where we put together our best team ever, with players coming over with "so-called" big time European experience, but all that went out the window with the blow of the first whistle.

If we were going to win at the Azteca, in front of 100,000 Mexican fans, we needed to play and be different than our previous 22 loses in Mexico, and it looked like that early on. We were aggressive in the opening minutes, playing collectively, and a great through ball from Landon Donavan set up Charlie Davies perfectly for the opening goal in the 8th minute. After that, I felt like I saw the same old U.S. team, sitting back, packing it in, and making careless mistakes. It was deja vu all over again seeing Mexico control the pace, passing, and moving the ball side to side all over the field.

"I said this week that I didn’t want people to get carried away. This wasn’t a live or die game for us; it was for them," said Landon Donovan after the game. Are you kidding me? This is the attitude and passion from one of our leaders? Was it not YOU Landon who let Giovanni Dos Santos beat you all over the field and set up the final goal?

We are missing one key element on this team: Intimidation. We need that Pablo Mastroeni type player who controls the midfield, who defends with his emotions on his sleeves, who will make a challenge that will make you think twice of coming down the middle of the field. We don't need the ole type, soft defense of Landon Donovan. For all his offensive skills, he was exposed today of his inability to play defense.

I don't blame the altitude, the stadium, the coaching, or Tim Howard. I blame our midfield players. Yes you Mr. Michael Bradley who made errant passes, Yes you Mr. Ricardo Clark who did not pass well under pressure, Yes you Mr. Landon Donovan who played no defense. Where do we go from here? Our next game is against El Salvador in Sandy, Utah on September 5th. We better use that opportunity to rebuild and start to figure out what kind of team we will be.

0-23-1. Enough said.

Mexico to play U.S. without Barcelona Star

One day away from another historic and important rivalry game against Mexico, the United States Men's National team is already receiving some good news. Mexico's star defender, Rafael Marquez, who is currently playing his club football for Spanish League giants Barcelona, will not available tomorrow due to injury. In an interview today from Mexico, Marquez was optimistic that he would be ready in time for the game tomorrow, however doctors and trainers from both Barcelona and the Mexican National team felt that he was not ready to return to action. "I am disappointed," stated Marquez.

Marquez's absence as the center back of the Mexican defense will be greatly felt. Marquez has played against some of the top offensive players in the world, is a great on leader on the field, and gives Mexico a sense of calm under pressure.

Now with Marquez out, the US Men's National team can use their strength and size to dominate and control the offensive side of the ball, especially on set plays, such as corner kicks and free kicks. Players such as Brian Ching, Jozy Altidore, and Carlos Bocanegra will be more crucial than ever, with their world-class ability to score from set pieces.

Marquez's replacement will not be announced until game time.

US Men's National team ready to face Mexico at the Azteca

The most anticipated game in CONCACAF's World Cup Qualifying final round is almost here. When you think of rivalry, hatred, passion, and playing on the biggest stage, any US soccer player and fan will tell you that playing at the famous Azteca Stadium, in front of 100,000 Mexican fans is just that. The US Men's National Team has a lifetime record of 0-22-1 at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico, put many feel that on Wednesday, history will be made.

After a strong performance at the Confederations Cup in South Africa, with victories over Egypt, Spain, and a near victory over 5-time World Cup Champions Brazil, the US Mens team had elevated its game on the biggest stage. However, after a 5-0 blowout loss to Mexico at the Gold Cup Final, although the team was comprised mostly of MLS players and not the same team that played at the Confederations Cup, have many wondering what that impact will be going into a place they have never won.

Coach Bod Bradley on a conference call today from Miami feels that the team heading in Mexico, comprised mostly of Americans playing in Europe, has the expierence and quality to win. Players such as Tim Howard, Carlos Bocanegra, Oguchi Onyewu, Steve Churendolo, Micheal Bradley, and Jozy Altidore, all play for world-class club teams, and have played in front of large hostile crowds.

Another factor that will be the altitude with Mexico City being 7,349 ft above sea-level. Coach Bob Bradley's strategy will be to arrive late to Mexico City just hours before the game and not practice at all before kick-off. According to Coach Bradley and researchers, arriving late will lessen the impact of the body having to adjust to a high-altitude location.

With the group and quality of players that US Men's National team is taking to Mexico, anything but a win, will be a setback for not only World Cup qualifying, but for the progress of US soccer. If we cannot win in that type of environment, with the group of players that we have, with only a year away from the World Cup, I would be seriously concerned about the status of the national team. Both teams have much more to lose than to win. If Mexico loses, they will be in serious danger of not qualifying for the World Cup in 2010. If the US loses, where does the national team go from here? Was the Confederations Cup performance a fluke? Are we not ready for the World Cup?

One thing is for sure, on Wednesday between the lines, you will see 22 players playing their heart, soul, and guts out. There will be hard fouls, challenges, passion and only one team will feel the glory of victory. It will definitely be a historic game, once again.

HOLDEN PK LIFTS DYNAMO PAST FIRE

Stuart Holden blasted a PK past Chicago Fire goalkeeper John Busch in the 83rd minute to lift the Houston Dynamo to an exciting 3-2 win. With this win the Houston Dynamo increase their lead atop the Western Conference by 7 points over the surging second place L.A. Galaxy.

Corey Ashes' speed on the left flank proved to be too much for Chicago defender Brandon Prideaux in the 83rd minute when a risky challenge inside the box failed and referee Terry Vaughn immediately blew the whistle and pointed to the penalty kick spot. Coming off a strong individual performance in the Gold Cup for the US Men's National Team, Stuart Holden netted his sixth goal of the MLS campaign.

The Western Conference leaders will next face Real Salt Lake on Saturday.
